Golf Tips: The Callaway X460
Overview
In 2006, Callaway Golf introduced the X460 driver to an overwhelmed golf community. With a 10 percent larger face than that of the Big Bertha 454, the driver used to win the 2004 RE/MAX Long Drive Championship, the X460 was designed to blow away the field and re-establish how drivers are judged.
The Facts
Callaway Golf put all their technology advancements into the X460. After the success of oversized-head drivers, including their own Big Bertha line, Callaway combined a CT/VFT face, a consistent alignment sole and other patented Callaway Golf technologies to achieve the industry’s lead in better ball speed and deeper drives.
The X-Sole Design, a characteristic of most of the clubs in the X-series, allows the club head to rest on two points of the sole, thus preventing any twisting at contact for better control down the target line. The Callaway Patented Tru-Bore Technology, the Short Straight Hollow Hosel, and the CT/VFT face combined allow the golfer to hit the ball harder and straighter without swinging harder.
Function and Hitability
Because of the improved ball-speed technology that Callaway employed in the X460, all golfers are afforded the fit and feel of a professional club, with professional distance. The Tru-Bore technology means the shaft is closer to the club head, leaving the golfer with more control over ball contact than in previous models. Even on mis-hits, the X460 will help correct in the distance category–still allowing a long drive. But the same isn’t true for accuracy.
The flat and balanced clubface creates less spin than other industry drivers. Some drivers have weight off-sets to help those golfers with natural slice or draw swings to
become more consistent down the target line. With the X460, distance is king.
Swings moving from inside to help the club face to close at contact, creating a squarer impact zone and promoting a straighter ball flight. However, many golfers unfortunately use an outside to inside swing. That leads to loss of distance and a slice. The X460 has you covered on the distance, but it won’t help much with your direction, like some other specially-weighted clubs will.
A player using the club needs to make sure their swing is in line and consistent at contact to experience the full power of the club.
